There’s a reason why Frankfurt isn’t on the list of places to visit. Being a German finance hub, it’s very much a city of ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. We were definitely staying in the latter. Perhaps I’m being unfair as we found a really cool bar in Sachenhausen called ‘Alte Liebe’ and some delicious vegan schnitzel and Green Sauce (a Frankfurt delicacy which is made from various herbs, very delicious!) Althought my favourite Frankfurt delicacy was the Apfelwein. Which (as you’d imagine) was a cross between wine and cider. I almost exclusively drank it the whole time we were there.
The first day we did a guided tour by a local man who seemed to hate everything about Frankfurt. Or perhaps he was just trying to be self-deprecating? We then found our way out to a suburb where we went to see a French garage pop-punk band called “Johnnie Carwash” - who were genuinely a lot of fun and worth the trip! The venue was at a place called Hafen 2 - which for Bristol people is like a mixture of the outside part of Motion and the city farm in Windmill Hill.
Our last day also happened to be Elen’s birthday! We started the day with a trip to “Kleine Markthalle” for some delicious pasta and some drinks before we met a local wine expert called Georg (without the E at the end) who took us to some really nice bars for a few local German wines. We ended the day with a sunset river cruise before a bit more Apfelwein.
I can’t say either of us will be going back to Frankfurt but I’m glad we went. On to Munich next to meet both our dads to walk 120km along the King Ludwig way!
